A must do attraction in a bucket list destination! In this post, we share our visit to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the iconic Michigan Upper Peninsula!
The "UP" (Upper Peninsula) is full of interesting, unique and beautiful places. You'll find things here that you won't find anywhere else. And Bonus: the summer weather is AWESOME!
We had heard stories of UP travels for years, but we had no idea that a national park existed there until we began planning for a visit.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is part of the US National Parks system. The National Lakeshore includes beaches, hiking trails, scenic drives, waterfall walks and an epic boat tour on Lake Superior. The view from the water is really where the Pictured Rocks shine.
If you'd like to explore the park by land, be sure to pick up a good park map at the Visitor Center. We tried to rely on Google Maps and ended up on a wild goose chase! There is not a lot of signage and the roads are not well marked.
Short, easy waterfall viewing hikes are all around the Munising area. Again, check with the Visitor Center for information.
The Picture Rocks Cruises Boat Tours are the prime way to see the beautiful rock formations that made this part of the National Park system. Cruises book up. To be sure you get the day and time that works best for you, we recommend buying your tickets early.
We arrived at the boat loading area and got in line 45 minutes before our scheduled departure time to get a front row seat on the top deck.
Multiple cruise types and times are available every day during the season.
Free parking is available near the boat boarding area.
There are 2 official park Visitor Centers: the Munising Falls Visitor Center on the west end of the park and the Grand Sable Visitor Center on the east end of the park. They are located more than an hour apart. If you plan to visit both and take in views throughout the park, be sure to schedule enough time for your visit (and again, pick up a good map!).
If you are worried about potential seasickness, I recommend Sea-Bands. I always wear them on boat tours because I never know what type of experience to expect. I had no issues on this tour. But I'm glad I had them on just in case.
📍 Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore spans 42 miles along Lake Superior. The boat tours depart from Munising, Michigan.
We stayed just a few minutes away at Pictured Rocks RV Park and Campground in Christmas, Michigan.
Visit the official Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore website from the US National Parks Service.
Pictured Rocks Boat Tour information, rates and schedules can be found on the Pictured Rocks Cruises website.
