Glass Bottom Boat Shipwreck Tour

Munising, Michigan

Published:

Truly one of the most amazing boat tours we've ever taken! Join us as we explore the shipwrecks of Lake Superior aboard the largest glass bottom boat in the world!

We found information about this excursion at the Visitor Center after we arrived in Munising, Michigan. This was our first visit to the iconic Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and we were eager to explore the largest of the Great Lakes... Lake Superior!

Even growing up in Texas, we heard stories of Lake Superior ship wrecks. So what more interesting way to begin our Lake Superior experience than going on a Shipwreck Tour! But, then we learned that the Shipwreck Express is the largest glass bottom boat in the world! Yep, we were sold.

But, did the Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tour live up to our expectations?? Well, let's put it this way: this attraction quickly went from being one we'd never heard of to one that we tell everyone about. We believe this is an absolute MUST DO boat tour when you visit Munising, Michigan!

And guess what?? It's not JUST about shipwrecks! During our excursion, we heard stories about the local area and got an upclose glimpse at interesting landscapes and historic buildings that can only be reached by boat. Our ride on the Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tour was the perfect mix of a beautiful boat ride on Lake Superior, interesting historical stories, incredible views of the shoreline and wildlife, and "Oh WOW" shipwreck sightings.

Add this shipwreck tour on Lake Superior to your Michigan UP bucket list!

Tips for Enjoying the Shipwreck Tour in Munising MI

There are several ways to explore Lake Superior from the water here. This tour, however, gives you underwater views and history that you won't experience any other way. Be sure to plan time to take multiple boat tours while you're here. But don't miss this one!

This family-owned and operated boat tour runs from Memorial Day weekend through September. The most daily departures are offered through July and the beginning of August.

We recommend buying your tickets in advance to be sure that you are able to get tickets for the day and time that you prefer. We bought our tickets in person at their ticket office the day before our tour. You can also purchase tickets online before you arrive in Munising.

Wheelchair accessible tours are available. Check with their office for details.

As of the time of this post, discounts are available for Seniors, Military with ID and Children.

As with any boat tour, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes with good traction as in tennis shoes or hiking boots. We also brought light jackets, just in case. And we bought water from the gift shop before we boarded the boat.

We arrived early and were able to get seats outside at the front of the boat which made for GREAT views!

What happens if you board a full boat and can't start out inside at the glass bottom viewing area? No problem! The crew divides up passengers into two groups so that everyone has an opportunity to see all of the featured shipwrecks through both the glass bottom windows and from above over the side of the boat. For the best experience, be prepared to go up and down a short set of stairs several times during your excursion.

As we mention in the video, there is plenty of free car parking at their building and right across the street. We didn't see any area large enough to park an RV. But that's okay... trust us, you want to spend several days in Munising. So pick an RV park or campground and start exploring!

And you may have noticed in the video that I (Stacie) am wearing wristbands. These are Sea-Bands. I take them on cruises in case of rough seas and they help me avoid getting seasick. I wear them on boat tours because I never know what type of experience to expect. I had no issues on this tour, the Shipwreck Express is a stable boat and the water was calm. But I'm glad I had them on just in case.
