In recent years, few towns or cities have seen the level of tourism growth to match a once quiet college town in Central Texas. Now a tourist destination for folks from all over the globe, join us as we explore Waco, Texas.
It had been many years since we had visited Waco. We stayed busy exploring for a full week. There's a lot more to do here than we remember!
Be sure to visit the Waco Welcome Center at the beginning of your stay for brochures and information for all kinds of fun and interesting things to do in the Waco area. You'll find it right next door to the Texas Ranger Museum at 106 Texas Ranger Trail, Waco, TX 76706.
Waco has really grown in tourism popularity since Chip and Joanna Gaines began their show "Fixer Upper" back in 2013, putting Waco on the radar for folks all over the world. To keep up with the increase in visitors, there was a lot of construction around town during our visit. Pack your patience and check with your selected attractions ahead of time to ensure that they will be open during your visit and for local construction updates in their area.
Don't try to rush through your visit. Everything that we enjoyed during our time in Waco took time to actually explore. There is a lot to see and do here. Don't try to wear yourself out by cramming too much into one day.
Do Not Miss Magnolia! Yes, it is a tourist spot. Yes, it can be crowded. Yes, it is trendy. But it is also FREE with FREE parking and very nicely done. Chip and Joanna Gaines (Magnolia's founders) have done a TON to revitalize and reenergize the Waco community. We appreciate everything they have done and wanted to pay our respects to them by visiting Magnolia Market. It was well worth our time (and the bakery was worth the wait!). Bonus, it's just a short walk from there to the Dr Pepper Museum. You can easily visit both of these attractions on the same day.
There are a number of Corps of Engineer campgrounds just a few minutes away from the city on Waco Lake. We used one of these as our homebase and it worked out perfectly.
We spent a week and didn't have time to see and do everything we wanted to do. However, we were there during Easter week, so admission times were limited on some days during our stay. Depending on how much relaxation time you would like, a week stay may or may not be enough to see and do everything on your list.
