What the Heck is a Fjord???

A fjord (pronounced fyord) is a narrow, deep and long inlet that leads inland from the sea. Fjords are characterized by steep cliffs in mountainous coastal regions and were typically formed by glaciers. Fjords can also be found in Canada, Norway, New Zealand, Greenland and Chile.

Often a fjord is deeper than the height of the mountains that surround it!

Since the fjord is a glacial valley flooded by ocean water, it is often brackish, meaning that the water is a mix of salty sea water and freshwater from snow melt (via the many waterfalls).

To be classified as a fjord, the body of water has to be longer (sea to shore) than it is wide.
